Viennese are drawn to the Mediterranean this year

National and international vacation destinations present themselves at the vacation fair.

The booking situation for the summer is encouraging and travel is very popular. But when it comes to choosing a vacation destination, people are sticking to the tried and tested.

The Viennese are in travel fever. This was evident yesterday at the opening of the Holiday Fair, which runs until March 17 at Messe Wien. The first queues were already forming in front of the grounds before 10 am.

This is also reflected in the booking situation. According to tour operator Tui, summer business is already in full swing, with double-digit growth reported. The most popular type of travel continues to be beach vacations, with Turkey ahead of Crete and Majorca among the favorites. In terms of long-haul destinations, the USA is in first place, followed by Thailand and the Maldives.

Croatia records an increase in tourists
79 percent of Austrians surveyed by Tui want to travel this year, a third have already booked. 77 percent are planning a trip abroad.

But those who have the choice are spoiled for choice. Inspiration is provided by the Holiday Fair, where numerous destinations from Austria and abroad are presented. New this year are Sri Lanka and Azerbaijan, for example. But the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Mongolia and Uganda will also be presenting their most beautiful places.

More exotic destinations such as Africa will also be promoted.

Croatia is a particularly popular destination with the Viennese. "The booking situation is very good and has already overtaken the pre-corona period," says Branimin Toncinic, Director of the Croatian Tourist Board in Vienna. After Italy, it is the most popular destination for those traveling by car. But where is it particularly beautiful? "My insider tip is the southern part of the country. The journey is longer, but you can enjoy your vacation on small islands surrounded by nature," says Toncinic.

Those who find a beach vacation too boring can find out about horse, golf, diving or bible tours. Customs will be on hand at a stand to give tips on how to avoid a rude awakening after your vacation with a souvenir or two.

Markus Kastler from Reiseparadies Kastler is also pleased with the high demand. Whether it's a vacation in the mountains, the Mediterranean or the Middle East (see survey) - visitors' travel wishes are as varied as the world itself.

I have planned a vacation in Austria. It's simply a beautiful country with its mountains and lakes. Plus, I can speak German and go home whenever I want.
