Unfulfilled dreams
Meloni gives intimate insights into her life
She used to want to be a singer or a volleyball player. But nothing came of it, and now she is Italy's Prime Minister. Giorgia Meloni gave intimate insights into her life at a dinner with foreign correspondents on Tuesday.
"I wanted to be a singer, but I don't have a voice. I wanted to play in the national volleyball team, but I'm a dwarf. I wanted to meet Michael Jackson, but he died too soon." However, the leader of the post-fascist Fratelli d'Italia party joked that becoming prime minister was definitely not one of her dreams.
Learned Italian because of Michael Jackson
The 47-year-old Meloni reported that she had only learned English thanks to her love of Michael Jackson, "because I wanted to understand what he was saying in his songs". The head of government admitted that she was not an optimistic person. "The glass is always half empty for me, but because I imagine the worst possible scenario, I am able to deal with all other situations," explained the head of government, who has been in office since October 2022.
She has many negative sides, but not what she considers to be the most devastating quality of a politician - vanity. "In reality, I am a person who likes to laugh, especially at herself," said Meloni.
"I don't like being prime minister"
The Italian also spoke about her political career, which she began at the age of 15 as an activist in the youth organization of the neo-fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI) party in Rome. "I am a person who has spent two-thirds of my life involved in politics, and I still consider it the most extraordinary form of civic engagement there is. I don't like being in office as Prime Minister and that's precisely why I could stay here longer than others," says Meloni.
