Probably no fatalities
Magnitude 5.7: The earth shook on Hawaii’s main island
According to US seismologists, a strong earthquake has shaken the US state of Hawaii. The magnitude 5.7 quake occurred near Pahala on the main island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island, the US earthquake observatory USGS announced on Friday.
The epicenter of the quake was 37 kilometers below the earth's surface, and no tsunami warning was issued.
Big Island is the largest of Hawaii's eight main islands. The quake was felt all over the island, according to an analysis of field reports on a website operated by the USGS. According to the agency, the likelihood of damage or fatalities was low.
Seismic activity
Hawaii is part of a seismically active region of the world, although it is located in the center of a large tectonic plate, not on the edge. The island is home to six active volcanoes, including Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world. In 2022, Mauna Loa erupted for the first time in four decades, spewing fountains of lava 60 meters high.
In May 2018, the Kilauea volcano erupted on the Big Island after a series of earthquakes. Thousands of people were evacuated and dozens of houses were destroyed.
