EU wants answers on Microsoft search engine Bing

The European Commission is demanding more information from Microsoft on how it deals with certain risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in the Bing search engine.

The Brussels authority issued a request for information on Friday on the basis of a new EU law on digital services, as it announced. According to the request, the US company is to provide more information on the measures taken to mitigate the risks posed by generative AI.

This refers to a form of artificial intelligence that can create new content and ideas such as conversations, stories and images. According to the EU Commission, generative AI can, for example, lead to the mass distribution of deepfakes - images, videos or sound recordings that look deceptively real.

According to the information, Microsoft must provide the requested information by the end of May. Based on the answers, the Commission will determine the next steps. If the company provides false, incomplete or misleading information or refuses to answer the questions, the authority could impose fines.
