Istanbul attack
Main defendant sentenced to 1794 years in prison
One and a half years after the attack on the Istanbul shopping mall, the main defendant has been sentenced to 1794 years in prison. Six people were killed at the time. The woman is accused of carrying out the attack in the name of the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG.
The YPG had denied links to the attack and the Turkish government responded with airstrikes in northern Syria. The Turkish government considers the YPG militia to be a terrorist organization. The incident took place on November 13, 2022. Surveillance images showed the main defendant placing a bag at a bank and then walking away from the location. The bomb is said to have been inside, which exploded. Six people were killed and another 99 were injured.
36 people on trial
A court in Istanbul has now found the defendant guilty of premeditated murder, disrupting the unity of the state and the territorial integrity of the country, among other things. She was sentenced to 1794 years in prison and several life sentences.
The woman did not defend herself against the charges. She is said to have traveled illegally from northern Syria to Turkey, which is why there was criticism of security breaches. A total of 36 people were on trial. Another main defendant is still on the run.
