Pressure too great: authority approves illuminated cross
After protests and fierce criticism of the City of Graz over the excessively long official procedure in the "Tower Cross" case, the decision was made on Wednesday! The light installation can be switched on again!
Let there be light (again)! Tuesday's "Krone" report also caused outrage outside of Styria: last year, the illuminated tower cross of the Graz-Gösting parish church had to be unplugged because a local resident felt "dazzled" by the Christian symbol. He complained, whereupon the Graz Building and Facilities Authority was unable to find a permit for the "structural measure" when it looked through the files. As a result, the officials initiated proceedings and issued an order: Lights out!
After several interventions by the parish had had no effect, Pastor Karl Niederer launched a petition. "A 2000-year-old symbol not only of faith but also of our culture is being put on the same level as any advertisement by the authorities," protested Niederer. Many residents of Gösting were of the same opinion, 230 even signed a petition to the city of Graz. "Give us back our church cross," they demanded.
After our story, however, things happened very quickly. The building and facilities authority, which had been waiting for an expert opinion from the city planning office, no longer wanted to be accused of delay. The process had already taken eight long months.

And so the office of KPÖ city councillor Manfred Eber, who had been pushing for a quick solution, was able to announce the good news to the "Krone" on Wednesday: The permit for the church cross is "through", the light installation may be switched on again! "I'm very happy," beams Pastor Niederer at the good news. And the people of Gösting will rejoice with him - because now everything is also legally correct.
