Four and a half years in prison
Smuggler doesn’t understand the point of a defense lawyer
A Pakistani smuggled around 80 people to Austria in several trips. The 25-year-old was unreasonable during the trial at Eisenstadt Regional Court.
Even lawyer Florian Astl, who as usual put all his energy into defending his accused and had already asked for a "relatively lenient sentence" before the start of the trial at Eisenstadt Regional Court, seemed to have lost faith in his client over the course of the morning. "I advise him not to say anything more," said the defense lawyer, before his appeal was translated and simply ignored by the defendant.
Defendant had himself dragged
Now let's imagine a whirlpool. Yes, you can swallow it up. But there are also people who talk themselves into one - like the 25-year-old from Pakistan who bought a ticket to the western world for 500 euros and then became a trafficker himself.
Passenger? Driver?
He just wouldn't stop talking. He had been a co-driver during the smuggling of around 80 people. He was responsible for the navigation system - who, where, when, where to. He had only been the driver twice on the eight incriminated journeys across the border to Austria, including of course when he was caught. Cell phone analyses prove the opposite.
The man had first evaded a police check. On the second attempt to catch him, he sped through a barrier. The third time he tried to stop, he said that the police had demolished his front tire. The officers could only save themselves by jumping over the crash barrier.
The sentence: four and a half years for six journeys plus resisting arrest - not final.
