With the shin on the table and one foot on the edge of the table - the winner of the spring hooking competition in Pfarrwerfen was the man with the most muscle, stamina and calluses on his fingers. St. Koloman took home the victory. Even the youngest participants were enthusiastic and surprisingly strong.

"Everyone signs before the competition that they will take the injuries upon themselves and are solely responsible for them." Andreas Lindenthaler is an old-school finger chopper and chairman of the 1st Salzburg Finger Chopping Club. He has been competing regularly with other men in his weight class for 40 years. A leather ring is placed around the index or middle finger and the opponent pushes his finger through the leather on the other side. Put your foot or knee on the table, lean back and then pull. Whoever gives up control first loses.

What is the fascination of finger hooking, why do the men voluntarily inflict pain and open wounds on themselves? The chairman can't quite explain it. "It's hard to find the motivation to train, especially after a defeat," admits Lindenthaler. "And if I've had a long break, it hurts again in training." Lindenthaler can be recognized by his thick index finger, which is protected from the incisive leather ring by calluses. For those who haven't been at it that long, the competition is often a bloody affair. That's why there is a first aid station at spring hooking, where torn fingers are treated with plasters and bandages. Even the little ones have a good move: Lorenz (6) and Rupert (4) Wallinger from St. Koloman join in with the children and are almost as good as their dad Rupert, who has been competing since 1994.

After two rounds in each weight category, St. Koloman took the overall victory at the spring hooking competition in Pfarrwerfen. The teams from Ammergau and Schlierachgau (both Bavaria) came second and third. Two women from St. Koloman also won the women's event, Katharina Zierfuß and Lena Rohregger.
