Oscar mishap 2.0:
Tired Pacino ruins Best Picture announcement
The 96th Academy Awards was an expectedly glittering evening, but it was during the announcement of the most important award, "Best Film", that an unexpected upset occurred.
Hollywood legend Al Pacino (83), who had the honor of announcing the winner, looked visibly tired and unfocused. Instead of celebrating the excitement, he mumbled the name of the film "Oppenheimer" almost inaudibly to himself. He hadn't even read out the other nominees beforehand.
Confusion in the audience
Instead of thunderous cheers, there was initially a brief silence. The audience was confused and did not understand that the most important prize of the evening had already been awarded.
Pacino's listless performance ruined what should have been a spectacular moment.
Nolan picks up his first Oscar
Despite the mishap, "Oppenheimer" was able to accept its seventh Oscar of the evening.
Director Christopher Nolan (53) received his first Oscar of his career.
Was it on purpose or tiredness?
It is unclear whether Pacino seemed deliberately disinterested or was simply tired. The event had already dragged on for several hours.
Memories of Beatty & Dunaway
And it wasn't as embarrassing as Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway's Oscar mishap at the 2017 Academy Awards. The two were also supposed to read out the big winner of the Best Picture Oscar at the end of the trophy show.
However, the supposed winner envelope contained the wrong card-Dunaway read out "La La Land". It was only corrected after a few minutes of shock: "Moonlight" was the winner. It was the fault of the helpers backstage, but Dunaway and Beatty, the long-gray "Bonnie and Clyde" crooks, got the criticism.
