90 million dollars
Trials against author: Trump deposits fine!
After losing his defamation trial against the US author E. Jean Carroll, former US President Donald Trump has deposited more than 90 million US dollars in bail with the court. A court document published on Friday shows that the 77-year-old is also appealing against this verdict.
In a second civil trial, a court had sentenced Trump to pay Carroll compensation of 83.3 million dollars (around 77 million euros). A New York jury had deemed it proven that Trump had assaulted, sexually abused and later slandered Carroll in a New York department store in 1996.
Trump also lost the first trial
The now 80-year-old was awarded five million dollars in the first trial, which Trump also appealed against. Trump now had to deposit the money with the court - together with an additional sum due to court provisions and interest.
Unlike in the first trial, Trump had appeared in person several times in the second trial and attracted attention with numerous comments, which is why the judge had threatened to disqualify him in the meantime.
Further trouble is inevitable
Trump will in all likelihood be the Republican candidate and challenger to US President Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential elections in November. However, he is currently also having to deal with the courts in numerous different cases.
He was also recently found guilty in a fraud trial and has to deposit more than 450 million dollars.
