Birgit suffered from bleeding and pain for two years and withdrew more and more. A hysterectomy brought relief - but is a piece of her femininity missing? The "Krone" asked around and spoke to experts.

Birgit was in her mid-forties when she suddenly started having problems with her period: "It was totally irregular, I had constant pain and bleeding between periods," says the mother of a teenage daughter. Her gynecologist discovered fibroids (benign tumors) during an examination and tried to get the problems under control by changing the pill and administering hormones. When that didn't help, the now 47-year-old switched to the three-monthly injection - and then the situation totally derailed.
