USA: Thieves steal 30 million dollars from money depository

Thieves have stolen around 30 million US dollars (just under 28 million euros) in a break-in at a money storage facility in a district of Los Angeles. This was reported by the local police on Wednesday. They spoke of one of the biggest cash thefts in the history of the city.

According to the police, the perpetrators broke into a GardaWorld cash depot in Sylmar, a district of the Californian city of millions, on Easter Sunday night. It is unclear how the burglars proceeded and why nobody noticed anything.

The criminals not only managed to get into the building of the global company, which manages cash for several companies in the region, unnoticed, they were even able to open the safe in which the money was kept. The head of the Los Angeles Police Department, Elaine Morales, told the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

Experts: Professionals with insider knowledge
According to the US television station ABC7, GardaWorld employees only noticed the theft when they opened the safe, which was still completely intact, on Easter Monday. Mysteriously, the safe showed no signs of having been broken into, reports the Los Angeles Times. Experts assume that the burglars were professionals who had inside knowledge.

The crime is reminiscent of Hollywood films such as "Ocean's Eleven", but at the same time fits in with a series of actual burglaries in the region in recent years. Two years ago, thieves stole jewels worth up to 100 million dollars from a truck parked at a truck stop. In July, a man cut a hole in the ceiling of a luxury wine store near Venice Beach and stole 600,000 euros worth of Burgundy and Bordeaux wines.

According to the newspaper, the current burglary is one of the biggest cash thefts in the history of the Californian metropolis of millions.
