The new Renault Twingo is coming soon!
Renault has a whole hand full of retro cards. The electrifying new edition of the R5 has just been presented - with an immense media response - and the next trick is almost ready: the electric Renault Twingo.
According to insiders, the French are about to get fully underway with the development of this small electric car. According to two people familiar with the matter, the go-ahead will be given in April. According to a third insider, production of the small car will start in two years at the Slovenian plant in Novo Mesto, where the current generation rolls off the production line.
Renault wants to position itself against the growing competition from e-car manufacturers from China with a model costing less than 20,000 euros. The car manufacturer did not comment on the plans.
The French company is aiming to cooperate with other car manufacturers in order to reduce costs with high volumes. Renault announced talks with Volkswagen at the end of February. According to insiders, these will continue, although the development of prototypes and the selection of suppliers for the Twingo is already underway at Renault's electric car subsidiary Ampere.
VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer stated in March that an entry-level electric car should be launched on the market by 2027, possibly in collaboration with partners. A decision is expected in the coming months.
