"High bar"
“Israel threatens endless guerrilla warfare in Gaza!”
According to a media report, Israel's army is threatening to become embroiled in an endless guerrilla war in the Gaza Strip by the Islamist Hamas due to a lack of an obvious strategy. The Israeli armed forces are fighting in more and more places in the Gaza Strip that they would have previously captured and withdrawn from.
This shows how hard Israel is fighting to eliminate Hamas and bring the Palestinian coastal area under its control.
Hamas elimination "difficult to achieve"
Israel's leadership has set a high bar with its war goal of eliminating Hamas militarily and politically, which will be difficult to achieve, Yossi Mekelberg, Middle East analyst at the London-based think tank Chatham House, told the Wall Street Journal. "Anything below that will be perceived as a failure."
Israel's war efforts are being hampered by the fact that there is no plan for stabilizing the coastal area after the defeat of Hamas fighters. Now that much of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed and Hamas fighters are re-emerging and using guerrilla tactics, the Israeli leadership is divided.
Israel's security and its place in the world at risk
According to a media report, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also warned Israel against continuing the war in the Gaza Strip without a clear strategy. Israel's security and its place in the world are in danger, Blinken said at a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Even more Hamas terror possible
Israel needs a coherent plan, otherwise it will become entangled in an uprising that it will not be able to control. If the war continued as before, Hamas would retain control of the Gaza Strip or anarchy would break out, resulting in even more terror. Netanyahu replied that "we will have our hands full for decades to come",
Rapprochement in hostage negotiations
In the indirect negotiations on a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza war and an exchange of hostages for prisoners, Israel is said to be prepared to partially meet the demands of the Islamist Hamas. Israel would now release 700 Palestinian prisoners if Hamas releases 40 of around 100 Israeli hostages still alive.
