ÖVP attacks Zadic head-on after her word of power
The lowering of the age of criminal responsibility continues to cause political controversy. After Justice Minister Alma Zadic put a stop to the debate, the ÖVP and FPÖ are astonished. Support comes from the Social Democrats.
Constitution Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) argued that a broad discussion was needed in such a sensitive area. In the past ten years, the number of underage suspects had almost doubled.
Criticism from ÖVP and FPÖ
"I don't think it makes sense to reject things from the outset and rule out measures." It is not about "putting children in prison", but about being able to take enforceable measures that are currently related to the age of criminal responsibility, says the politician. The safety and protection of "our" children should not be an ideological issue.
FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl described the minister's statement as a "slap in the face of the victims". "With this obstructive stance, Zadic is sending a message of joy to all young rapists and criminals." He announced that he would launch an initiative to lower the age of criminal responsibility in the upcoming National Council session: "If the ÖVP has backbone, it will vote with us and thus against the Greens."
SPÖ jumps to Zadic's side
The plan to lower the age of criminal responsibility is demonstrably not sensible and represents a continuation of wrong policies, such as the closure of the juvenile court, it was already stated on Thursday in an SPÖ resolution. There are no experts who would consider locking up under 14-year-olds to be an appropriate measure.
For young people of this age, there is still an extremely high chance of achieving an improvement through socio-educational and psychiatric measures.
