Insolvency application
Court circles: Benko files for private insolvency
Today, Thursday, March 7, 2024, René Benko experienced his most bitter hours yet: The founder of the convoluted Signa Group, listed by "Forbes" as a multiple billionaire for years, had to file for insolvency as an entrepreneur at the Innsbruck regional court, as the "Krone" learned from court circles. This means that the 46-year-old entrepreneur is also insolvent as a private individual.
The ball was set rolling by the Financial Procurator's Office, which had already filed for insolvency against Benko at the beginning of the year. The case concerns debts to the tax authorities - amounting to around two million euros.
Third installment for restructuring still owed
In addition, the real estate speculator failed to pay the promised third million that he was supposed to raise to restructure his bankrupt Signa Holding. The second of the three installments originally promised to the liquidator had already come "from a third party".
On February 13, a first hearing was held before the regional court in the absence of the financial juggler. Only his lawyers were present at the time. On March 5, the deadline expired for the Tyrolean to provide documents on possible assets.
Private assets often stashed in foundations
Financial juggler Benko not only created a complex, non-transparent group of companies consisting of well over 1000 companies, but also liked to stash his private assets in foundations. However, according to the secret annual financial statements, the two Austrian foundations, the Benko Family Private Foundation and the Laura Private Foundation, no longer had any significant liquidity at the end of 2022 given their size. At least not compared to the previous year.
In Liechtenstein, however, there is still the INGBE Foundation, which is attributed to Benko and his mother Ingeborg. Benko's daughter is said to be the only beneficiary.
The parliamentary committee of inquiry revealed on Wednesday that Benko earned almost 26 million euros in 2019.
