ÖSV athlete ends her career at the age of 27
Retirement in the ÖSV camp: ski racer Marie-Therese Sporer ends her career at the age of 27! "I'm tired and exhausted and no longer have the energy you need for professional sport, plus it no longer makes me happy," says Sporer.
The slalom specialist made her World Cup debut in Kranjska Gora (SLO) in January 2018. Sporer has competed in a total of 38 World Cup races. This season, she achieved her best World Cup result with 13th place in Levi (FIN).
"Deep, dark holes"
Sporer posted an emotional video on Instagram. "It was a really nice time," said Sporer, who made it into the top 30 nine times. However, she often fell into "deep, dark holes" and occasionally lost the joy of skiing. However, she always managed to find the joy again, she emphasized.
The Finkenberg native celebrated one of her greatest successes at the Junior World Championships in Aare (SWE), where she won the silver medal in the team competition together with Fabio Gstrein, Katharina Liensberger and Simon Rueland in 2017. During her career, the 27-year-old has had to battle with numerous injuries, but has always made her way back. Now, however, it is time to break new ground.
"Skiing was a school of life"
"The decision to retire was already made in Flachau," explains Sporer. "For me, skiing was a school of life that made me the person I am today and I am very grateful for that. I have coped well with the challenges that come with top-class sport, including injuries, and so today is the right time for me to say goodbye to my professional career. I'm looking forward to the future and everything that lies ahead."
