Numerous onlookers torpedoed an operation in Quellenstraße near Reumannplatz in Vienna-Favoriten on Friday evening. Four men - two of them armed - had been involved in a stabbing, resulting in two serious injuries. But that was not all: according to the police, several passers-by tried to prevent both the arrests and the first aid.

Countless emergency services had to be deployed to Quellenstraße at around 11 pm. According to information from a passer-by, around 30 police cars were involved in the operation. The road also had to be closed off. Flashing blue lights could be seen everywhere.

According to current information, two men - 21 and 45 years old - approached a group of people unexpectedly and attacked two men in the group (18 and 21 years old) with a knife in a subsequent altercation.

Large crowd of onlookers
Police spokeswoman Barbara Gass confirmed the operation to the "Krone" newspaper. However, the reason for the numerous police patrols was the large number of onlookers. "During the operation, passers-by blocked the access road. In addition, a few people tried to prevent the arrests and first aid services." Nevertheless, the Vienna Professional Rescue Service managed to provide emergency medical care to the two injured people and then take them to hospital.

Passers-by not reported so far
Because the situation at the scene was "very dynamic", according to Gass, no further charges have been filed so far. The task now is to check whether any administrative offenses have been committed, including with the help of surveillance cameras. Several pepper sprays and knives were recovered at the scene.
