Another volcanic eruption occurred in Iceland on Thursday morning. North of the coastal town of Grindavík, a long fissure opened up, from which glowing red lava gushed many meters into the air (see video above).

A lava field quickly formed around the fissure, as could be seen in live streams from the Icelandic radio station RÚV. The volcanic area on the Reykjanes peninsula southwest of Reykjavik has repeatedly seen spectacular fissure eruptions of this kind in recent times, most recently in January, when the lava also reached the foothills of Grindavík.

Accumulation of millions of cubic meters of magma
The weather authority Vedurstofa recently recorded a renewed accumulation of several million cubic meters of magma below the area and therefore warned that the probability of another eruption in the near future had increased.

Earthquake activity heralded the eruption
According to the weather authority, the eruption began at around 6 a.m. on Thursday to the north-east of Mount Sylingarfell, having been announced shortly beforehand by increasing earthquake activity. The fissure was around three kilometers long and the lava was initially flowing mainly to the west, the authority announced in the morning.

Lava fountains up to around 80 meters high
"The lava fountains reach a height of about 50 to 80 meters and the plume rises to a height of about three kilometers" above the volcanic fissure, reported Iceland's Meteorological Institute (IMO). However, the lava flow appears to be "somewhat lower" compared to the start of the eruption on December 18, it said.

However, there was initially no immediate danger to Grindavík, the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, which is very popular with tourists, or a power plant in the area, according to broadcaster RÚV.

Sixth eruption in almost three years
This is the sixth volcanic eruption in Iceland in almost three years. The last eruption also occurred near Grindavik on January 14. The IMO warned of another eruption on Monday.
