West Vienna in the Cup final! “Simply unbelievable”
West Wien made domestic handball history on Friday evening by becoming the first second-division team to reach the final of the ÖHB Cup. The young, talented team of coach Roland Marouschek defeated the clearly favored HLA club Graz 28:25 in the final event in Schwaz.
Huge cheers! The players danced in a circle, coach Roli Marouschek gave a big round of applause to the strong goalkeeper Uvodic and his team before the numerous fans and parents who had come along to watch the game.
West Vienna became the first second-division team ever to reach the Handball Cup final at home in Schwaz yesterday - thanks to a fantastic 28:25 win against HLA runners-up Graz. "It's simply unbelievable," said Marouschek. "My lads were amazing, got stronger and stronger in the game and showed their qualities." The young Viennese side were +3 (14:11) ahead for the first time after 26 minutes in front of A-team captain Pajovic, and captain Pfeifer and Co. quickly increased their lead to +5 after the break (16:14). They led just as clearly after 50 minutes, before Graz came close again - but Uvodic simply made a really strong stop. "Sandro was unbelievable and also had good cover in front of him," praised Marouschek, in whose team Clemens Möstl and Bryslawski were top scorers with six goals each.
On Saturday (16.20, live ORF Sport +), the final against Schwaz will be played with last year's green champion Samuel Kofler and former Fivers goalie Tanic. The hosts eliminated defending champions and league round winners Hard 33:31 and are keen to win their second major club title. And against the surprise team West Wien, which has already made history.
