Expensive Salzburg drives many into poverty

The social market is a lifeline for more and more people at risk of poverty.

1.3 million people in Austria are at risk of poverty: Stories that get under your skin are also part of everyday life at Caritas Salzburg's social counseling centers.

Poverty is no longer a marginal phenomenon: cries for help also come from the middle class. More and more of those affected cannot afford the horrendous housing costs. "The city is a particularly expensive place to live. But when it comes to energy issues, the pressure is high in all regions," explains Torsten Bichler, Head of Division at Caritas in Salzburg. Families with many children or single parents are particularly likely to seek advice from Caritas in the provincial capital or in the districts. In many cases, the downward spiral begins with separation, relocation or a high deposit that cannot be raised. Healthcare costs also become an increasing burden for those who do not fall into the minimum income bracket.

Those affected are among the 1.3 million people in Austria who are at risk of poverty according to the new social report. Due to coronavirus, inflation and other crises, the figures have recently risen sharply: In 2023 alone, Caritas social counseling recorded around 16,000 contacts. The problems are becoming more complex. On average, those affected come to a counseling appointment four to five times. Figures for 2024 are not yet available. However, those responsible are hoping for a slight easing in the future. "Quick help, such as the housing umbrella, is taking effect," says Torsten Bichler. But he warns: "The gap remains. Long-term solutions are needed here."

Last year, Wohnungslosenhilfe in Salzburg also collected current figures on housing needs. Conclusion: large families in particular fail to find accommodation.
