Maybe it's not such a bad thing that the Vienna Capitals didn't make it into the ICE Hockey League playoffs this year, because they've been spared a major embarrassment! As has been the case time and again in previous years, the ice technology is causing trouble. As a result, a hole has opened up in the ice surface of the Capitals' home ground ... 

Flashback: In October 2022, the Capitals' league game against the Black Wings Linz had to be canceled due to an ammonia leak on the ice system. And around a year later, the Caps' clash with Red Bull Salzburg had to be called off after the first period because coolant had leaked from a defective hose under the ice and washed out the playing surface - risk of injury!

It is unclear whether this is the same defect as last October, but it is not unlikely - short-term rescue attempts by the indoor ice champion were not crowned with success, as the "Kurier" reported. Now the ice has to be completely thawed before they can think about preparing a new playing surface.

However, they should not allow themselves too much time: Austria's national team, which needs proper ice to prepare for the 2024 Ice Hockey World Championships in the Czech Republic, has announced its arrival in early April ...
