Women in Formula 1? “Chances are increasing”
Will a woman make it back into Formula 1 one day? German driver Carrie Schreiner, who competes for Team Sauber in the F1 Academy, is optimistic. "The chances are getting better and better, maybe someone will make it in the next five or ten years," the 25-year-old told SID (see video above).
The last woman to compete in a Formula 1 GP was the Italian Lella Lombardi in 1976.
Second season for Schreiner
Schreiner starts her second season in the F1 Academy - a racing series for women only - on Friday. "Of course, it would be nice if I could regularly finish in the top eight and be among the front runners as often as possible," said the Saarland native about her goals for the season. Last year, Schreiner finished eleventh in the overall standings and even took a race win in Zandvoort. Thanks to her good performances, she will also be competing in 2024 with the support of traditional F1 racing team Sauber. This is "a cool experience", says Schreiner. Only since this year have all Formula 1 teams had a female driver in the F1 Academy.
