The negative trend continues

The economic downturn in the industrial and construction sectors is also driving up unemployment figures in Vorarlberg, the westernmost province of Austria.

The recession is making itself increasingly felt on the labor market, unfortunately also in Vorarlberg: the number of unemployed (9590) has risen by 1116 people or 13.2 percent year-on-year. "Industry and the construction sector continue to record a strong increase," explains AMS Regional Managing Director Bernhard Bereuter. "The economic downturn continues to leave its mark on the Vorarlberg labor market," he explains.

The number of registered unemployed people with a career aspiration in construction has risen by 52.7 percent to 510 and in the metal and electrical professions by 20.2 percent to 667. "There are currently no signs of an economic recovery. We must therefore assume that unemployment figures will continue to rise in the coming months," fears Bereuter.

The unemployment rate in Vorarlberg currently stands at5.2 percent. This puts the state below the Austrian rate of 6.9 percent.

There are currently 4,782 vacancies for job seekers, a reduction of 181 jobs or 3.6 percent compared to the previous year. Bereuter emphasizes the importance of an active job search in order to keep the duration of unemployment as short as possible.

However, there is also good news: the number of long-term unemployed people has fallen by 3.2 percent compared to the previous year to 1567.
