Within the space of a few days, bloodshed has once again broken out in Vienna-Favoriten: A 28-year-old man was attacked with a knife by a stranger on Favoritenstraße. At the same time, there is said to have been a brawl at Reumannplatz. A knife was also involved here. The weapons ban zone that has been called for for some time will be set up here "in the coming days".

The measure comes after several people were seriously injured in knife attacks in the neighborhood the previous week. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) described the measure as a "first step".

Already two weapons ban zones in Vienna
Once it comes into force, the zone will be the second such facility in the federal capital. There is already such a zone at Praterstern in Leopoldstadt and the surrounding area. On the Danube Canal, such a weapons ban was in place from February 2019 to February 2021 on parts of the Franz-Josefs-Kai. This was not extended for the Danube Canal at the time.

A corresponding order from the Vienna Provincial Police Directorate is always required. The police are allowed to search people in the zones. If someone is caught, they must hand in their weapons. They must also expect an administrative fine.

Karner emphasized that the police want to take decisive action against juvenile delinquency. The weapons ban zone is part of a corresponding "package of measures". A working group is currently working on ways to reduce the age of criminal responsibility and to enforce consequences and sanctions for offenders who are not of criminal age.

Furthermore, a legal amendment for a general ban on weapons - especially knives - in public spaces is being worked on. The political decision-makers primarily want to remove knives from circulation in public spaces.

"Ensure efficient powers"
"Consistent action against youth crime requires measures at various levels," said the Minister of the Interior. The aim is to ensure that the police have efficient powers across the board in order to be better able to take knives out of circulation."
