Cause of fire at Feldkirch building yard determined
After the waste management center in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg) was consumed by flames, the cause of the fire has now been determined. Incorrectly disposed waste was probably the cause.
On Tuesday evening there was an alarm in Feldkirch, the local building yard was in flames, resulting in a large-scale operation by the fire department. At the time, it was not yet clear why the fire had broken out in the first place. After intensive investigations by the state and federal criminal investigation offices, it is now clear how the fire started:
Investigators were able to narrow down the area where the fire broke out to a very specific container for the disposal of bulky waste. When inspecting the waste, the officers noticed that there were so-called "misfits", i.e. rechargeable batteries, batteries, aerosol cans and similar items.
In conjunction with findings from the crime scene and video analysis, it is now certain that the fire started in this container. The flames then spread from there to the building.
Further investigations are still ongoing
According to the police, the source of the ignition can no longer be clearly verified due to the high level of destruction. However, it is almost certain that it was one of the aforementioned misfires. Further investigations, in particular into the waste that has ended up in the container since it was last emptied on Monday, are still ongoing.
