Who will be mayor?
The suspense continues in 14 municipalities
On March 24, things will get dicey in a number of Salzburg municipalities. It is mainly ÖVP mayors whose seats are shaky.
Run-off elections are scheduled for March 24 in 14 of Salzburg's 119 municipalities. It will be exciting in Flachgau in Strobl, which has been predominantly black up to now. Here, SPÖ candidate Harald Humer is forcing the new ÖVP candidate Christof Hillebrand into the second round of voting. "Losing four seats hurts. The Kurz tailwind was gone," says Adi Rieger (ÖVP) in Neumarkt. He has to run against SPÖ leader David Egger.
In Oberalm, Hans-Jörg Haslauer (ÖVP), who is still head of the local council, will face the critical voters again in two weeks' time. He will be up against his SPÖ deputy Christian Haslauer, but was far ahead on Sunday.
There will be five run-off elections in Pongau. Landmark decisions are pending in St. Johann and Bad Gastein, for example - the "Krone" reported. In Forstau, political newcomer Gregor Schwarz is once again running against Martina Rettensteiner (ÖVP).
In Pinzgau, the mayoral question is open in two municipalities: In the red stronghold of Saalfelden, Erich Rohrmoser must defend the office against the black challenger, Thomas Haslinger. The same applies to Andreas Schweinberger (ÖVP), head of Neukirchen: Vice Marlene Steiger-Brugger from a citizens' list also wants to win the chief seat from him after the municipal council.
